If you're in the market for a sedan, the Kia Optima and the Mazda6 are two sporty options in the midsize car class. They share powerful performance, spacious interiors, and a long list of safety features, but there are some differences that may make one the better choice for your needs.

Drivers in Langhorne, Philadelphia, and Levittown can find out the key differences between these two sporty sedans with our Kia Optima vs. Mazda6 comparison.

Performance

Both the Optima and the Mazda6 are equipped with inline-four engines that offer plenty of power, with upgraded engine options for those looking for more performance. The uprated option in the Optima lineup is a 1.6-liter turbo-four, producing 178 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, which mates to a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. There's also a 2.0-liter turbo-four producing 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The Mazda6 upgrade is also a turbo-four, but its output is lower, at 227 horsepower.

Both vehicles offer sharp handling with remarkable body composure and the balanced, comfortable ride necessary for a vehicle in this class. The Optima has selectable drive modes, in Eco, Normal, and Sport, to adjust the throttle response and transmission behavior for the driving situation; however, this isn't available for the Mazda6.

Interior Comfort and Space

The Optima and the Mazda6 each have well-appointed cabins with comfortable, supportive seating. The Optima's seats have a bit more bolstering though, which give it more long-distance comfort than the Mazda6. Head- and legroom are abundant in both vehicles, and upgrades like leather upholstery and heated seats enhance the comfort further.

For cargo space, both have wide, spacious trunks that can hold luggage or shopping bags easily and 60/40-split folding seats to configure the space. The Mazda6 only has 14.7 cubic feet of space, however, compared to the 15.9 cubic feet for the Optima. This may not sound like much, but it could mean the difference between one more carry-on or a grocery bag.

Technology

The Optima and the Mazda6 come with a long list of technology features, including a touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth® connectivity, and Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ smartphone integration for better entertainment and connectivity. The Optima has the superior system, however, with a user-friendly interface and simple menu options. The Mazda6 infotainment is competent enough and has a bright screen, but its menu is a little outdated.

For safety, both vehicles come with a rearview camera. The Optima includes blind-spot monitors with rear cross-traffic assist and parking assistance as well, while the Mazda6 includes low-speed automatic emergency braking. Other features are available throughout both lineups, such as forward collision alert and adaptive cruise control, giving you the awareness you need to stay safe and protected on the road.
